Position Overview
The Structural Steel Detailing Estimator plays a key role within the Sales & Marketing department by supporting quoting and scope-change activities for structural steel detailing projects. This role is responsible for reviewing bid documentation, performing material take-offs, preparing accurate and timely quotes, and following up on issued quotations. The Estimator is also responsible for identifying changes to established project scope and preparing the work tickets required to document and price additional or revised work.
Working closely with the Business Development Manager and internal project teams, the Estimator ensures that bid information and project scope changes are accurately analyzed, documented, and processed. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of structural steel detailing workflows to maintain accuracy and traceability throughout both the quoting and Engineering Change Notice (ECN) processes.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating and Quoting
- Review and process structural and architectural bid drawings, specifications, and related documents to determine project scope and estimating requirements.
- Prepare material take-offs and analyze project requirements to develop accurate estimates for structural steel detailing services.
- Prepare quote documents based on the defined scope, material take-offs, project requirements, and company estimating standards.
- Review completed quotes for accuracy and completeness before sending them to customers.
- Follow up with customers on issued quotes, clarifications, and pending decisions.
- Maintain organized records of bid documentation, estimates, issued quotes, revisions, and related customer correspondence.
Scope Changes and Work Tickets
- Review BFA packages, design drawing revisions, client requests, shop and field questions, meeting notes, and other project information to identify changes from the established project scope.
- Evaluate identified scope changes to determine the additional or revised detailing work required and the associated pricing.
- Prepare work tickets that clearly document the scope change, required work, pricing, and supporting project information.
- Coordinate with internal project teams to clarify scope changes and obtain information required to complete work tickets accurately.
- Follow up on work tickets through the internal review and approval process.
- Group approved work tickets into Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), prepare the required ECN documentation, and send completed ECNs to customers.
- Follow up with customers on outstanding ECNs and approvals.
- Maintain organized and traceable records of scope-change documentation, work tickets, ECNs, approvals, and related correspondence.
Invoicing and Administrative Support
- Prepare invoices and associated backup documentation in accordance with approved scope.
- Ensure all pricing documentation, supporting calculations, work tickets, scope clarifications, and related records are properly archived.
- Track and ensure that payments are received from customers.
Additional Operational Support
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned based on project, departmental, and organizational needs.
- Provide support in other areas when required to contribute to overall company operations.
Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher in Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 2–4 years of experience in structural steel detailing, estimating, construction take-offs, or related preconstruction roles. Experience within the structural steel or construction industry is required.
- Experience performing material take-offs and preparing estimates or quotes from structural and architectural bid documents.
- Experience reviewing project revisions and related documentation to identify and document changes in project scope is preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret structural steel drawings, architectural drawings, design revisions, specifications, and related project documentation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including Excel and Word.
- Experience with Bluebeam for quantity take-offs and document review is required.
- Familiarity with structural steel detailing software such as SDS2 is an asset.
- Working knowledge of Specifications for Structural Steel Buildings ANSI/AISC 360-22 and Structural Welding Code – Steel AWS D1.1:2020 is an asset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Planner.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
