Director of Project Execution
Structural Steel Detailing and Connection Design Engineering
Position Overview
The Director of Project Execution is responsible for leading and overseeing the technical execution of all structural steel detailing and connection design operations within JITECH. This role ensures that modeling, detailing, checking, erection drawing development, connection engineering, and BIM coordination are performed accurately, efficiently, and in full compliance with client requirements, contractual obligations, and applicable industry standards.
Reporting to executive leadership, the Director of Project Execution provides strategic and operational direction to the Project Execution Department. This position is accountable for technical excellence, production quality, workflow optimization, team development, and execution performance across all projects. The Director works in close collaboration with the Director of Project Delivery to ensure alignment between technical execution, scheduling, budgets, and client expectations while maintaining clear separation of responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
Department Leadership and Accountability (LMA)
- Lead, manage, and hold accountable the Project Execution Manager and all technical production teams.
- Establish clear performance expectations aligned with quality, accuracy, productivity, and delivery standards.
- Develop department-level goals, KPIs, and execution benchmarks.
- Ensure consistent application of company standards, detailing practices, and engineering protocols.
- Promote a culture of accountability, ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Technical Oversight and Quality Assurance
- Oversee all structural steel detailing, modeling, checking, erection drawings, and connection design activities.
- Ensure deliverables comply with project specifications, contract documents, and applicable codes and standards.
- Maintain oversight of complex technical issues, constructability challenges, and engineering integration risks.
- Ensure adherence to ANSI/AISC 360-22, AWS D1.1:2020, AWS welding practices, and International Building Code provisions applicable to structural steel.
- Support internal QA/QC programs to reduce rework, errors, and technical inconsistencies.
Execution Strategy and Workflow Optimization
- Design and implement scalable execution workflows for modeling, detailing, and connection engineering.
- Optimize BIM coordination processes, model integration standards, and technical communication protocols.
- Improve production efficiency through standardized procedures, automation, and digital tool integration.
- Monitor execution performance metrics and identify opportunities to enhance productivity and technical output.
Employee Development and Training Programs
- Develop, implement, and maintain a structured employee training and technical development program for detailing and engineering teams.
- Establish onboarding programs for new hires, ensuring alignment with JITECH standards and workflows.
- Create technical competency matrices and career progression pathways for modelers, detailers, checkers, and engineers.
- Coordinate ongoing professional development initiatives, including software training, code updates, and industry best practices.
- Promote mentorship and knowledge-sharing across technical teams.
Resource Planning and Capacity Coordination
- Collaborate with the Director of Project Delivery to align technical capacity with project demand and scheduling requirements.
- Support workforce planning, hiring recommendations, and team structure optimization.
- Ensure balanced workload distribution across modeling, detailing, erection, and engineering teams.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with the Director of Project Delivery to align execution performance with commercial objectives.
- Support technical input for scope changes and change order evaluations.
- Partner with HR and leadership on recruitment strategies for technical roles.
- Contribute to strategic planning initiatives related to growth, scalability, and operational excellence.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 8–12 years of progressive experience in structural steel detailing, connection design, and technical leadership roles.
- Demonstrated experience leading multi-disciplinary detailing and engineering teams.
- Strong technical expertise in structural steel workflows, including RFIs, ECNs, IFAs, ROAs, ABMs, and revision management.
- Proficiency with SDS2, Tekla Structures, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and structural connection design software (RISA, SCIA, IdeaStatica or equivalent).
- Working knowledge of ANSI/AISC 360-22, AWS D1.1:2020, AWS welding practices, and International Building Code provisions applicable to structural steel buildings.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Planner.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
