Position Overview
The Structural Steel Detailing Estimator plays a key role within the Sales & Marketing department by supporting preconstruction and quoting activities for structural steel detailing projects. This role is responsible for reviewing structural and architectural drawings, interpreting project scope, and preparing accurate and timely cost estimates to support business development efforts.
Working closely with the Business Development Representative, the Estimator ensures that all technical information is properly analyzed and translated into clear, comprehensive proposals for clients. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of structural steel detailing workflows to ensure alignment between scope, pricing, and deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating and Take-Offs
- Review structural and architectural drawings, specifications, and related documents to determine project scope.
- Prepare quantity take-offs from drawings for structural steel detailing projects.
- Analyze technical information received from clients and process it for quoting purposes.
- Develop scope summaries based on contract documents, sketches, bid packages, and miscellaneous scope requests.
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates aligned with project requirements and company standards.
Quoting and Client Documentation
- Prepare and send quotes based on approved scope summaries, take-offs, and received documentation.
- Prepare and issue change orders and work tickets in alignment with project scope revisions.
- Coordinate with the Business Development Representative to ensure proposals are complete, accurate, and submitted on time.
- Maintain organized records of estimates, revisions, issued quotes, and client correspondence.
Invoicing and Administrative Support
- Prepare invoices and associated backup documentation in accordance with approved scope and issued work tickets.
- Ensure all pricing documentation, supporting calculations, and scope clarifications are properly archived.
- Support follow-up activities related to issued quotes and pending approvals as directed by the Business Development Representative.
- Track and ensure that payments are received from customers, assisting with collection efforts when needed.
Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher in Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 2–4 years of experience in structural steel detailing, estimating, construction take-offs, or related preconstruction roles. Experience within the structural steel or construction industry is required.
- Ability to read and interpret structural steel drawings, architectural drawings, and project specifications.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including Excel and Word.
- Experience with Bluebeam for quantity take-offs and document review is required. Familiarity with structural steel detailing software such as SDS2 is an asset.
- Working knowledge of Specifications for Structural Steel Buildings ANSI/AISC 360-22 and Structural Welding Code – Steel AWS D1.1:2020 is an asset.
- Excellent English writing and communication abilities.
